What is CMS?

Content management systems (CMS) are simply a computer software system used to help facilitate the arranging, collation and publishing of web documents. The CMS software makes it possible for web developers to design powerful and modern looking websites faster and easier than the normal process.

A CMS or Content Managed website refers to any website that can be changed / modified in 'real-time' ( Live ). The maintenance process is performed through a simple web interface / browser and enables you to keep your website up to date 24/7.

The downside is that the majority of all CMS websites are template driven which can reduce the website design options. Of course you can pay more if you wish the web designer to create a website with CMS which is tailor made to suit all your requirements.

How the CMS works

Website Content Creation

At the front end of the content management system ( CMS ) is an easy-to-use authoring layout, designed to work like Word. Here you can create new pages and update content without knowing any html. The system also enables the user to manage the overall structure of the website. ie Where pages are located and how they are linked together.

Content Management Process

Once a page has been created, it is then saved into a central database within the CMS. The database contains all the content of the website, along with the other supporting details.

This central database allows a range of the following useful features to be provided by the CMS.
  • Makes it possible to keep track of all the versions of a particular page, and who changed what and when

  • Helps to ensure that each user can only change the section of the site they are responsible for

  • Integration with existing information sources and IT systems

Publishing Website Content

Once the final content has been completed and has been stored in the CMS database, it can then be published out to either the website or intranet. Content Management Systems boast a powerful publishing engine which allows the appearance and page layout of the website to be applied automatically during publishing. It may also allow the same content to be published to multiple sites.

Graphic designers and web developers can specify the appearance that is applied by the system which ensures that the pages are consistent across the entire website promoting a high standard in appearance.
